Lao films seek out international stage

In the wake of rave reviews and positive feedback, drama film ‘Khor Phieng Hak' has been selected as one of Laos' film entries for this year's Luang Prabang International Film Festival in December.

According to the Director General of the Department of Cinema, Mr Bounchao Phichit, ‘Khor Phieng Hak' provided audiences with the opportunity to appreciate the depth and personal conflicts of each character, which helped create a sense of understanding and empathy.

Furthermore, the promotion of unity and solidarity reflected the common Lao experience of fighting to improve one's conditions and the endless search for a better life.

Mr Bounchao explained that the 450th anniversary celebrations of Vientiane as the nation's capital would create a perfect context for the screening of the film. The department will invite representatives from 10 Asean countries to the event in the hope of showcasing the triumphs of Laos' creative industries to an international audience.

He hopes the event will promote a sharing of knowledge and information. There is emphasis on Lao film directors to engage with their regional counterparts to learn more about movie production and cinematic techniques in the push to improve Laos' growing film industry.

The most important objective is to see Lao films received well on the international stage. This proposition was encouraged by the positive reception of Lao short films in the Australian and Japanese market.

If possible, the department also wishes to see the film screened at the Vietnam International Film Festival in October. The festival is tipped to be the biggest on record as it coincides with the celebrations surrounding the 1000th anniversary of Hanoi.

South East Asian film festivals are a major tourist attraction and the screening of Lao films at these events provides the best opportunity for international exposure and notoriety.

‘Khor Phieng Hak' was produced by Mr Anousone Sirisackda, who has had six years experience in movie production education and direction at a film institute in Kiev, Russia. This is his first major film in the wake of previous offerings ‘Bod Hien Xee Vith' (2005), and ‘Duang Jai Khong Phor' (2006).

Through innovative visual techniques, ‘Khor Phieng Hak' offers audiences insight into the real struggles faced by Lao communities, with a focus on young people in particular. The film has a philosophical stance, communicating topical ideas about environmental conservation and the difficulties of young love.
